The art of designing interfaces II

Summary:

Turin, Italy 2003
"The Art of Designing User Interfaces" workshop will guide participants through some of the most compelling aspects of graphical user interfaces (GUIs), including the design process and the varieties of interaction modes and styles, borrowed from photography, cinema, television, comic strips and technical illustrations.
An in-depth technical knowledge of UI design is not required for this course. The workshop will focus primarily on the practical details of user interface design, and will offer participants the proper tools and environment to begin designing effective user interfaces. Alternating between explanation, discussion, and hands-on exercises, the workshop will also address issues and concepts such as: display organization, aesthetic considerations, usability and new GUI paradigms.
Participants will collaborate in small teams on a design solution of an interface for a specified system, to be implemented in a final prototype. The goal is to enhance participants' critical observation skills, evaluate their ideas, and help them begin to develop a practical skill-set necessary to create successful user interfaces.

Objectives:

1. Appreciate the importance of and learn to distinguish elements of good interface design.
2. Understand the underlying theory for Human Computer Interaction (HCI) design and how it relates to other aspects of product development.
3. Acquire basic skills and knowledge for developing a project plan and strategy of a real-case user interface scenario.
4. Learn to translate collected ideas and data into initial designs.
5. Employ a development methodology and make use of appropriate tools to create a simple prototype.
6. Begin to develop understanding of the social, intellectual and aesthetic dimensions of the user interface
