icons design
This is a sampling of the range of icon styles created in the last years. The styles encompass a spectrum from simple to complex, grayscale to hundreds of colors and symbolic to photorealistic.

Web Icons: ZoomView user interface
Viewpoint 2002
On the Web, documents are typically composed of text and images, sometimes with links to audio and video content. While user interfaces for accessing text and static 2D images are widely used, users are not familiar with navigating a dynamic 2D image. Viewpoint's proprietary ZoomView technology requires a set of intuitive interface controls so users can easily interact with images.

Application icons: Infini-D
Specular. 1995
In this case the icon gives a fair indication of the function of the product. The infini-D application icon shows 3d modeling as an art form ( it's on pedestal) as well a movie making capability ( the hint of a film strip down the side).
Most applications have a range of icons for associated files used by it. The main application icon is used as the basis for additional designs and even folders in which Infini-D items are stored as a further aid to recognition.

3D tools icons, MetaFlash
Metacreations. 1999
There is not application tools consistency in the 3D application world, each of the applications have it's own set with little or no reference to others. By contrast the approach taken by metacreations was to keep consitency with all the professional 3D applications, Poser, Carrara and MetaFlash trough a consistent visual vocabulary and treatement".

Computer icons are most often of a uniform scale 32 pixelsheight by 32 pixels width or in an area of around 1/2 inch ( 1cm) square. within this tiny space the icon must define the type of object or fuction which it refers and make the image distictive and different enought from other icon fro competing applications.
