Last day of the year! LAST DAY OF WORK! :-)
I returned to work on December 15th not really knowing what was to happen in my "professional" future. Oh, I had my preferences, of course... I wanted to throw all my suits and cruel shoes in the trash and be in mama heaven for the forseeable future. About two weeks before I was due back, I visited my boss (Fred) in the office. During the course of our conversation, I casually noted that Alliance had recently cleaned house in the mutual funds department (thanks to their market timing fiasco) and wondered aloud if perhaps they were looking for some Bernstein talent to buff their tarnished image. Fred cleared his throat and looked everywhere as he noted that my comment was in fact quite perceptive, but that he had nothing further to add at this time. Sure.
Four days later he called me to announce that he had been appointed president of US Sales for the AllianceBernstein mutual funds department. I'm not sure but it seems that business generated is in the billions of $ annually(?). Anyway, he asked if I was interested in coming along with him, and I thought about it (for the appropriate conversational pause) and said that I thought this might be a good time to stay home for awhile etc. etc. He was great about it, and arranged for me to resign my position (so a job layoff would not show up in my NASD registration) but with all the itinerant "benefits" of a layoff due to job elimination.
Happy New Year!
What a fun holiday we've had! More on this really really soon I promise!
