Gosh, it's been so long since the last post, newswise. No baby yet, at least, but we're definitely on the countdown. Oh, and then there was the blackout...

It wasn't totally horrible, relatively speaking. We do live on the island of Manhattan, so there were no treks across bridges involved in our commute home that day. I will say, however, that I would have chosen some other time besides 8.6 months pregnant to walk down 36 flights of stairs and north 52 blocks on a 93-degree day. Too many numbers? Try then one (1) long walk home. The good parts, of which there were more than one (1) were: Galen was already home with Ajani waiting for us; the water was still working so I could sit under the cold shower for five minutes upon arrival; and Javier called 15 minutes after I arrived home, and he was just minutes away himself by then. All those things made our evening far more bearable than it would otherwise have been. It was HOT all night, but our power came back on at 6AM, and we all actually got some sleep after that.

OK, next. Just one week later was my LAST DAY AT WORK! :-) Not that I was thrilled to be away from the job and people, just that it was the last major step before the baby was born. It sort of felt like reaching a milestone. Everyone took me out for a lovely lunch at Beacon, and gave me a super-generous gift certificate to Albees. Good good (but good) people.

Naturally I repaid them by promptly LOSING the gift certificate. I lost it out of my backpack while in midtown with Galen one day. I was aware that something had fallen when I was getting out of a cab, I looked everywhere but saw nothing, and so foolishly concluded that I was being foolish. Fast forward to almost one week later when I finally realized that the certificate was missing -- I gave myself the BIG DUH award. It was Labor Day so I couldn't do anything about it, but the next day I called Albee's, and they were great about it. Get this: someone actually called the store and turned in the certificate. Not trying to actually spend it, just to report that they had found it. Can you believe what a big small town New York can be? They were happy to honor it, and I promptly spent the entire amount -- I have a $1.30 credit left.

I tremendously enjoyed having the past week just for Galen, who is between the summer and fall programs at school. He's actually fantastic about tailoring his activity level to suit my limitations these days. He can play games, read books, color etc. for hours with me, as long as I can arrange the strategic playdate in the park so that he can run back and forth a bit. Javier has been fantastic about filling that role. Galen only has to clap eyes on him and the engines start to rev.
