Father's Day and our 6th Anniversary this weekend. We really didn't celebrate either, primarily due to financial constraints (what else is new!?). Mike Eckel Sr and Jr came by for a visit on Sunday. We took them down to Canal St. so that they could find some knock-off handbags for the women at home. They came prepared with a sheaf of color print-outs of the top choices, and made a really game effort -- for approximately 13.5 minutes. Mike succeeded in bagging an "offering" for each of the ladies, and begged off for the rest of the afternoon. We went to Washington Square Park after that and basically watched Galen play. Poor guys -- it wasn't the most exciting New York experience, although it did have the stamp of authenticity! Javier's, Galen's and my assessment (separately!) was the same -- our favorite part of the day (besides seeing them!) was the ride downtown -- and back! -- in a big comfortable car. We don't often have the chance to travel around the island overland, so it's a rare treat.
So here's some news I never expected to share. Javier actually, really truly for real no doubt about it, received his Green Card!! We've only been waiting six years, waited yearly like cattle outside of just three separate INS facilities and enlisted the aid of only one congressman, so I don't know why they chose to apply the turbo-speed on processing. Must have been some mistake somewhere... Anyway, it's such a remotely possible event that it still doesn't seem possible to me that I can take this off my "slow-burn" list of anxieties. It's just great to have it out of our hair! It also happens to be the single most complex identity card I've ever seen. Dollar bills look like child's work next to this baby.
